Nara “the Heart of Japanese Ancient History”

Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784, and has many historical shrines and temples. In the center of the city, beautiful Nara National Park is the home for 1200 deer, where you can go right up and pet and feed them.
Famous tourist spots such as Kofukuji Temple, Todaiji Temple, and Kasuga Shrine are located in and/or around the park. Also within the park is the IWSM/MENSURA 2011 conference venue – Nara-Ken New Public Hall.

From there, the simplest route to Nara is by the Airport Limousine Bus, which takes approximately 90 minutes to arrive at Nara Hotel and Nara Station (Kintetsu and JR lines). From Nara Station, city bus numbers 2 is taken to bus stop, “Daibutsu-den Kasugataisha Mae” (approximately a 4 min. ride). From there it is only a three-minute walk to the Nara-ken New Public Hall (Shin-kokaido). Buses run every ten minutes. The basic fare for a taxi is JPY 640-660 for first 1.5km ride. The cost of a taxi from JR Nara Station, or Kintetsu Nara Station to the Nara-ken New Public Hall (Shin-kokaido) may be around JPY 730 – JPY 840.

It is recommended that participants planning to travel in Japan purchase a Japan Rail Pass. This pass encompasses all JR trains including the Bullet train (Shinkansen) and the Narita Express.
